PASSAGE Planet: SOLASTALGIA

Madeleine Kate McGowan (DK)
'SOLASTALGIA - Book of Songs' is a ritual, an invitation into a vocal universe where you, as a guest, are immersed in the sound of a world on the other side of an all-encompassing climate collapse.

Solastalgia is a neologism formed by the combination of the Latin word sōlācium (comfort) and the Greek root -algia (pain, suffering, grief), describing a form of emotional or existential distress caused by climate change. Through a journey into a series of vocal plateaus, participants will explore this grief, this solastalgia, through vibration, song, and sound arrangements from ‘the book of songs’. Accompanied by opera singer Lucie Curé and with scenography by Dicki Lakha, Madeleine Kate McGowan will invite participants on a journey through inner landscapes that explore the possibilities of freeing the voice as a way of living in times of crisis.

During the unfolding of the work, there will be collective sharing of testimonies that articulate the emotional landscapes associated with the climate crisis and the weaving of kvas into habitats that will be donated to the multi-species community in Helsingør.

INFO

Age: From 12 years
Duration: You can come and go as you please during the time period

Note: SOLASTALGIA is performed in both Danish and English.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

The performance is a longer investigation into how the grief arising in people in connection with the consequences of the climate crisis can possibly be collectively processed through art and voice. Director and performer Madeleine Kate McGowan manifested the first performance in 2021 at Sort/Hvid in Copenhagen, together with scenographer Dicki Lakha, Cæcilie Trier, and Soho Rezanejad. This led to a longer and deeper artistic exploration of the possibilities of art in relation to mental health in a time of multiple crises.

PASSAGE PLANET

The performance is part of PASSAGE Planet, a platform at the festival that addresses the human situation in connection with the climate crisis. It aims to create space for sharing thoughts with each other and inspiring hope. It is an invitation to share concerns about the time we live in and the climate crisis with each other through conversations, song, and creative workshops. Read more about PASSAGE Planet.
