About PASSAGE Festival

Welcome to PASSAGE Festival 2021

26.-31. July 2021

PASSAGE Festival is a living street theater festival in constant evolution and expansion, especially in relation to our surroundings. Urban areas, audiences and artists are all focal points in street theater in the public space.

In 2021, PASSAGE Festival explores the cosmopolitan heart of Helsingør in Europe. More than 50 European performers, poets, artists will present their works in Helsingør accompanied by almost as many cordially invited youths from 10 European countries.

Poetry in Backyards

Europe is in danger of losing its small languages. The poets Ana Ristović, Tomica Bajsić and Ana Svetel write in Croatian, Serbian and Slovenian, and will be presented at the festival under POETRY IN BACKYARDS in collaboration with the international poetry festival Poetry and Wine in Ptuj in Slovenia. The poets are presented in a broad collaboration with local parties in Helsingør, where the cosmopolitan city once again gets the opportunity to show its generosity by its hosting and give something back to the poets and to the audience.

Poetry is one of the entrances to this year’s festival. The Italian director Romeo Castellucci’s latest work The Third Reich also has a linguistic starting point. One of the sources of inspiration has been Victor Klemperer’s exploration of the language of the Third Reich in “LTI Lingua Tertii Imperii”. Castellucci has placed all nouns from the Italian dictionary into a massive and compressed sound and light installation, which has already attracted attention at the Triennale Milano, where it was shown in June. “The Third Reich” will be performed at Kulturværftet.

Danish performances

The director Jon Skulberg, who has garnered good reviews for Hotel Proformas’ “Amduat”, will show the performance Moving a Memory with his own company, Convoi Exceptionnel,  at the PASSAGE Festival. The performance is the first part of a trilogy about our common European learning space, and the cultural codes and memories we have from these places. The first part takes place in a gym.

Deep down in the mythical, the Danish company Sew Flunk Fury Wit works with the performance Fox Cave. A labyrinthine wandering tale into the fox’s cave, concerning erotic obsession, told in Helsingør ‘s old fire station.

International artistry

PASSAGE Festival has a large program with international artists. 78 Tours by French La Meute takes the audience on a hypnotic and ritualistic journey as they explore the legendary Wheel of Death. The three fearless artists have been a huge success at many European festivals. The same goes for Follow Me by the Belgian circus chameleons Be Flat, who transform Helsingør into a stage and invite the audience around among the scenography of the facades and the soundscape of the traffic.

Youth projects

About 50 youths from European countries will visit the festival in 2021 making their mark on Helsingør. They include, among others, a PASSAGE Volunteer Camp, a new folk high school format with different courses which will play an active role in many of the festival’s events. Several of the young people are also part of the European show People Power Partnership. The projects for young people are supported by the EU’s Creative Europe program and the European Solidarity Corps.

Listen along when the brand new Radio PASSAGE with Karen Dich at the helm goes “live” 29.-31. July at the festival in Helsingør. The program will cover current themes from the festival and interview several of the festival’s artists, so you can hear more about the background of the works. Radio PASSAGE will also tell the PASSAGE Festival’s own story and come up with new angles and surprising features. Radio PASSAGE broadcasts live from the streets of Helsingør and anyone who wants can come and listen.

For the kids

The children’s festival: Experience theater throughout Helsingør, in Espergærde, Ålsgårde and Hornbæk PASSAGE Festival is for everyone – big and small. Also in 2021, of course, there is a large theater program for children and families. A large part of the program takes place in residential areas in Helsingør Municipality.

Keep an eye on www.passagefestival.nu for regular updates of program points and ticket sales. The printed PASSAGE Festival program will be available in cultural centers and libraries in Helsingør Municipality after 15 July.

PASSAGE Festival is organized by Helsingør Teater and Dunkers Kulturhus.
The festival is one of Northern Europe’s largest international street theater festivals.

In 2021, however, the festival will only take place in Denmark.

The festival is supported by Helsingør Municipality, the City of Helsingborg and by the Statens Kunstfond as well as by the EU Commission’s Creative Europe program. For other contributors and partners, see Thank you.

We naturally follow the authorities’ guidelines and ensure a safe theater experience in the public space.
