About PASSAGE Festival

Welcome to PASSAGE Festival 2020

PASSAGE Festival is organized by Helsingør Teater and Dunkers Kulturhus. The festival is one of Northern Europe’s largest international street theater festivals.

PASSAGE Festival is a vibrant street theater festival that is constantly evolving and expanding, especially in relation to what goes on around us. The city, the audience and the artists are equally important in the making of street theater in public space.

Therefore the PASSAGE Festival is still going strong in the summer of 2020, as one of the only street theater festivals in Europe.

We have never doubted that we would complete the festival, although its design is radically different from what we had intended just six months ago.

The PASSAGE Festival should have celebrated the 10th anniversary of the cultural initiative in Helsingør with large, spectacular shows in the Culture harbor for thousands of people. Instead, we present a program in which international artists explore some of the spaces “the Helsingør locals” have visited in the recent months on walks and cycling tours in the vicinity of Helsingør, and where we live. The beach, the forest, the fields, quiet residential areas, the nursing homes, and the city. Many places we know well, as we have presented street theater there for several years, even outside the city center. But this year we have found even more quirky places in collaboration with the citizens of the Municipality of Helsingør.

Another significant change in the festival is that we will present both finished works and works in progress all the way up until the summer of 2021; amongst other the program b y p a s s, where artists are given the opportunity to create for the public space in Helsingør. At the PASSAGE Festival July 27th to August 1st you can amongst other experience b y p a s s projects BY THE WALL BARS – ECHO FROM A SCHOOL by Danish/Norwegian Convoi Exceptionnel, EVERYDAY PEOPLE, a situationist walk through places and non-places in Helsingør and CAMELIORQUESTRA, a crazy cirkcus concert by Teater GLiMT.

There will also be featured several digital projects under PASSAGE, which will be presented in collaboration with the SO Festival, for which the PASSAGE Festival and Helsingør Teater are the artistic director. SO Festival is canceled in its physical format in 2020 – instead, we meet in the digital world for SOfa Fest, in an edition that invites both a Danish and an English audience at the same time. Read more about under PROGRAM and SOfa Fest.

It is safe to say, that the program for the festival is being planned in changeable times. Therefore, there will be ongoing changes in the program as well as new additions during the festival. We will announce all changes here at www.passagefestival.nu. There is also a good chance that you can experience pop-up shows in the most unexpected places… So keep your eyes open!

PASSAGE Festival is still world-class international street theater.
