Mother Soldier
Composed by the Danish composer Sandra Boss, the performance stems from both historical and personal experiences of becoming a mother in a world full of war. Through music, choreography and costume design, Mother Soldier leads the audience through a series of tableaus: we see and hear women marching, we see them in doubt, in grief and in care, and we follow them in battle for their children.
Music in war times
Mother Soldier’s musical expression draws on war’s own aesthetics by incorporating and reworking marching music, which historically is a musical style created to communicate orders and encourage battle.
In Mother Soldier, the heavy march drum is exchanged with a light frame drum and the cymbal is replaced with a gong hanging around the performers’ neck.
The full sonic potential of these instruments are explored and exploited in order to make sonic associations to both march music, bombs, drones, heart beats and lullabies.
