Living Circus – Public

Be Flat (BE)

LIVING Circus takes hybrid circus beyond the public space and into locations that are not intended for performances – either PRIVATE or PUBLIC spaces, such as personal homes, living rooms, care institutions, cafés, libraries, prisons.

The different levels of intimacy play a profound part, and each location and the spectators are variable factors. LIVING Circus plays with these variables.

In LIVING Circus – Public, four circus artists, audiovisual artists, physical actors, and jazz musicians bring the circus into the main library in Helsingør, improvising in relation to the specific context, physical framework, and audience.

The artists playfully and actively invite and involve not just the audience, but people using these spaces for their (original) purpose, working or passing by.

Be Flat wants to stimulate curiosity for the unknown and a new view on the common (semi)public spaces in our cities.

LIVING Circus offers different performances: LIVING Circus Private, in private locations, and LIVING Circus Public. Each have their own logic, aesthetic, and message. Together they form LIVING Circus.

The audience can choose to experience just one or both, and in any order.

About the company

Be Flat is a Ghent circus company founded by Ward Mortier and Thomas Decaesstecker. The mix of acrobatic circus with urban sports and music creates a chameleon among circus performers. By responding to the surroundings, each performance becomes a unique event. Public and private spaces are questioned, viewing the city as a living organism, in constant change. Involving the audiences, their performances create questions of how we use our common areas. Be Flat has performed at several international Festivals, eg. Milton Keynes International Festival (IE), ReRiga Festival (LV), Greenwhich Docklands and Out There Festival (UK)
